Tajuk.co JAKARTA – The government is preparing to build three egg and meat meal processing plants as a permanent solution to strengthen the national livestock ecosystem. This measure aims to expand the market for livestock products, maintain price stability, and reduce Indonesia’s dependence on imported products.
Minister of Agriculture (Mentan) Andi Amran Sulaiman said that the construction of the factory is part of the government’s strategy to build an integrated livestock ecosystem, starting from the provision of raw materials for feed, strengthening the production of farmers and livestock breeders, to the absorption and processing of production results.
“We’ve already called the Minister of State-Owned Enterprises and the Minister of Trade. We’ve agreed to develop a livestock ecosystem, particularly the construction of egg and meat meal processing plants. God willing, we hope to begin next year. The target is completion within 1.5 years, with a maximum of two years,” said Minister of Agriculture Amran on Friday (October 9, 2026).
Minister of Agriculture Amran emphasized that developing a processing industry is a fundamental step to prevent recurring problems with livestock marketing. He stated that the government needs to provide long-term solutions that can absorb excess production while reducing dependence on the fresh produce market.
“This is a permanent, fundamental solution. If the factory is built, we will stop egg powder imports. We’ve agreed. Hopefully, once this ecosystem is established, the same problems won’t keep recurring,” he stressed.
He explained that the construction of the three factories would soon be followed up with a feasibility study (FS). The government estimates the initial investment requirement at around IDR 200 billion per factory, with a potential increase to IDR 250 billion for facilities that include meat processing.
Minister of Agriculture Amran asked relevant officials to oversee the preparation process so that planning, budget requirements, and facility construction could be promptly implemented. He also opened up opportunities for private sector involvement, emphasizing the importance of government involvement in strengthening this strategic industry.
“If the private sector wants to join forces, that’s fine. But the government is on their side,” he said.
Minister of Agriculture Amran also highlighted the importance of increasing public protein consumption through the availability of diverse food sources, including fish, chicken, and eggs. He stated that strengthening domestic protein production must go hand in hand with efforts to maintain affordable prices and expand markets.
“The key is how the economy moves and how to avoid making things difficult for farmers. Ensure adequate feed availability, and stable egg and meat prices. We want farmers to profit and improve their welfare,” he said.
By building three egg and meat meal processing plants, the government is encouraging the transformation of the national livestock sector from a sector that relies on fresh product sales to an integrated industry capable of processing, storing, and marketing products with higher added value.
With government support, cross-ministerial collaboration, farmer involvement, and partnership opportunities with the private sector, strengthening this ecosystem is expected to strengthen the domestic market, reduce dependence on imports, and improve the welfare of Indonesian farmers and livestock breeders.
